M/S Sandnes, the history of the boat
MS "Sandnes" served during the period 1950-1974 as the night ferry from Sandnes / Stavanger-Haugesund-Bergen. M/S "Sandnes" was not only the largest and finest of the night ferrys, but was also an extremely well proportioned ferry, and were frequently referred to as the coast's most beautiful ship. The night route was closed in 1974 and M/S "Sandnes" was sold to be used as an accommodation vessel for the "Viking Fjord" during the platform construction. In 1977 it began as a training ship "Gann" in Stavanger, and from 1995 as «Sjøkurs" in Kristiansand. When the training ship "Sjøkurs" was to be replaced by a larger training ship in 2007, the old night ferry ship came back to Stavanger where it got back its old name and was repainted in its originle green color. From 2010 M/S "Sandnes" was declared worthy of preservation by the Cultural Heritage and it is the largest veteran ship in Norway.
